Which Bar is for me?

Im looking to cut out my post work and commute home typical double cheesburger/fillet-o-fish/#10, and supplement it with some kind of protein bar. Preferably something that is half filling or an energy source as I typically lift when I get home. Any recommendations?

Haha anything is better than a #10! If you're taking the bar before you lift you should go with a bar that's high in carbs like Clif and stay away from the ones that are higher in fat like Supreme (even thought its the best tasting bar on the planet). The Myoplex light bars are also pretty good and they have a solid 2:1 carb to protein ratio (as opposed to Clifs 4:1). Bottom line is that as long as you get some carbs in you and go easy on the fat, you should feel much better during your workouts then you do after housing the Mickey D's menu.

I'm looking for a good low-carb bar for general consumption. Sometimes I get a little hungry and just need a little pick me up snack. What do the guys at 1R suggest?

@12PackAbs

If you're looking for a great low-carb bar that tastes incredible, you've gotta try the Supreme Protein bars.

The carb conscious variety only has 3 grams of net impact carbs and 15 grams of protein in only 200 calories. But our favorite part is that unlike most low carb bars these only have 2.5 grams of saturated fat.

There's a reason they're the 1R protein bar of choice around the office. They're loaded with whey isolate (instead of the soy that most bars have), they have incredible stats, and perhaps most importantly they taste better than most candy bars on the market right now.

So give the link a look as we'd love to hear what you think:

P.S. Go with the Caramel Nut Chocolate.

Just wanted to throw out there that I ordered 3 boxes of the Supreme Protein Carb Conscious (snack size) bars from 1R, and they are absolutely awesome. Best tasting bars I've ever had, and I've probably tried close to 30 different types of bars. Caramel Nut Chocolate and the Peanut Butter flavors are ridiculous...makes you wonder how it's healthy.

And, importantly, the protein is from whey not soy. You'll find a lot of bars with soy protein because it is much cheaper for manufacturers. The problem with soy is that it's an incomplete protein and may also have negative affects on men (some studies show increases in estrogen levels from high soy consumption). So, gents, make sure that 'tein bar you are eating has whey in it...go with the Supreme Bars.

Supreme bars = Certified deliciousness. It's as if Snickers slept with broccoli in a wild late night session, and the byproduct was born with Snickers taste, and broccoli's nutritional value. Yeah, in the big bars you get some calories, but for the taste and protein quality, I'm not sure anything's testing it currently.

I've had lots of different bars and Supreme bars are big league. Exceptional stats and PHENOMENAL taste to go with it. For a guy with a sweet tooth they are ideal!

I picked up some ON Wholly Oats bars from the 1R store in my last order. What a change up from my usual Clif Bar? Let me start by saying, no one like an Oatmeal Raisin Clif Bar more than HT himself. That said, a Wholly Oats chocolate peanut butter bar has been a welcomed change. I've known that I could get a more protein heavy and less carb loaded bar, but I've just kind of stubbornly been going about my Clif Bar ways.

So a quick run down on these bad boys:

Wholly Oats tastes great, has 21 grams of whey and casein protein (opposed to Clif's soy based protein) and has less carbs than a Clif Bar. It's a great meal replacement/pick-me-up before a lift. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

@hickorytein

Wholly Oats bars really are delicious and have actually made me reevaluate my mid-afternoon supreme choice. Way less fat, way fewer calories, and I feel like I'm actually eating something healthy as opposed to a chocolate bar.

Maybe its a mental thing, or maybe its the Oats in the title, but that is one tasty ass bar.

Anyone try the new iSatori Eat Smart bars? They taste pretty good and have 27 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber but the 330 calories and 33 grams of carbs strike me as a little high.

HUUUUGEEE fan of supreme bars though. Better than a Snickers.

Just tried ON Wholly Oats Strawberries and Cream as a preworkout pick me up. So far, I love it. Solid taste, not the best, but it packs an awesome punch.

Anybody tried the Syntha-6 bars from BSN and have a review? I've seen some around and noticed they're not on 1R.

By the way... And this certainly won't be my most manly/proud moment, but I did snag a Luna Bar Mini that was laying around a co-worker's desk (and then gave her a blank stare when she's inquired about its whereabouts), and, well... Those things are friggin delicious.

Why do Clif bars taste like bricks, and Lunas like drops from Jupiter (whatever that means)?

Are there any other suggestions for a low-carb/low cal bar? Even the snack size Supreme bars have a lot of calories.

The Muscle Milk Light bar is perfect with 160 cal, 18 carbs and 15 grams of protein. But I only like the Vanilla Toffee Crunch so I'm looking for new flavors with similar cal/carb/tein mix – the Chocolate Peanut Caramel flavor is too chocolatey.

Anybody know of a bar with similar nutritional content of the Muscle Milk Light that's not predominantly chocolate?

I like the Luna Minis as well and thought about just having 2, but the tein ends up to be just 8g with 22 carb. They make a great snack though.

Have you given the balance bars a shot? Not too many carbs or cals, really good taste, and the mint isn't too chocolatey if you're trying to avoid that.

Could also try going with some of the bars that atkins makes although the taste isn't anything to write home about.

@FC – thanks for the suggestions. I searched online last night and found the Atkins – the Chocolate Chip Granola fit what I was looking for so I’ll probably pick some up.

I’ve been getting the Lemon Meringue Balance Bars, but I’d like to change up my flavors so I may check out the Chocolate Mint Balance Bar since you said they aren't too chocolatey.

That’s the funny thing about the flavor names: I’d stayed away from the Mint ones bc they had the word ‘chocolate’ and bought a box of the Caramel Nut Blast Balance Bars specifically bc it wasn’t in the name but those were way too chocolatey – go figure. I ended up giving them away so want to avoid that happening again. I’ll have to see if any stores carry the single bars of the Mint so I can taste test them before buying a box.

The regular sized Luna bars have some good non-chocolate flavors but the 27 carb/9 p ratio isn’t that good.

Found the perfect bar - Balance Bar BARE Bars Sweet & Salty Peanut Butter. Tastes great and the 200cal/8f/21carb/15p proportions are pretty good.

@train4life

Tried those Balance Bar BARE bars last week after your suggestion and they're awesome. Thanks for the heads up!

Been crushing supremes for the past few months so the non-chocolate, trail-mix feel was a much needed change of pace.

@MrO - yeah hard to find good tasting/not dry non-chocolate varieties. I *really* like the PB BARE bars so was very happy that 1R added them to their store. They've been terrific at stocking all of the non-choc bar flavors that I've requested.

Other non-choc bar options I like are Balance Bar Gold Nutrition Lemon Meringue Crunch and Luna Lemon Zest and PB cookie. All of those are in the 1R store, but for some reason some of them are under Protein Bar and some are under Energy Bar categories - not sure what the differentiator is so look in both places.

Ok, apparently there's 2 ways to get to the store. If you click on Store at the top you get the 2 bar categories above. But, if you hover over Vitamins and Supplements on front page, Bars is an option. If you click that then all of the bar products come up.
